India’s petrol market has changed considerably with the expansion of ethanol-blended fuel. Under the Ethanol Blended Petrol Programme, the country has progressively increased the proportion of ethanol blended with petrol, with average blending reaching around 20% during 2025–26.

For most consumers, the discussion around E20 has centred on vehicle compatibility, fuel efficiency and engine performance. As the composition of mainstream petrol evolves, the quality and suitability of the equipment used around it deserves closer examination.

Understanding the Shift to E20 Petrol

E20 refers to petrol containing up to 20% ethanol blended with conventional petrol.

India’s transition did not happen overnight. Ethanol blending has increased gradually over more than a decade as production capacity, infrastructure and regulatory systems expanded. Government data shows that average ethanol blending rose from approximately 1.5% in 2013–14 to around 20% during 2025–26.

The programme forms part of India’s wider efforts to reduce crude-oil dependence, support domestic ethanol production and improve energy security.

India’s E20 transition represents a major development in the country’s fuel and energy landscape. Small quantities of petrol are still petrol. Whether five litres are being used for sampling, equipment refuelling, testing or emergency requirements, they should be stored and moved using equipment designed for the job.
